This project began with a garden that had slowly slipped out of use. What was once a cared-for space had become heavily overgrown, uneven, and difficult to manage, with defined areas blurred by years of unchecked growth. The client wanted a full reset — something practical, structured, and easy to maintain, while still feeling natural within the setting of the garden.
Our brief was to strip the space back, rebuild its structure from the ground up, and create a layout that felt intentional again. That meant clearing everything back to bare ground, redefining levels, replacing failing features, and introducing durable materials that would stand the test of time. The result is a garden that feels open, usable, and balanced — ready to be enjoyed again rather than battled with.
The starting point was a garden that had been overtaken by years of unmanaged growth. Former lawn areas were lost beneath weeds and self-seeded plants, levels were uneven, and the space had become difficult to navigate. While there was clear potential, the garden no longer functioned as a usable outdoor area.
All overgrowth was removed and the garden stripped back to ground level. This stage allowed us to expose the true condition of the site, revealing compacted soil, poor drainage areas, and uneven gradients that would need addressing before any rebuilding could take place.
The failing brick retaining wall was removed and replaced with new, pressure-treated timber sleepers. This not only provided a cleaner, more modern look, but also reinstated a clear split between levels, creating strength, stability, and long-term durability.
With the main structure in place, the upper section of the garden was carefully levelled and prepared. This groundwork was essential to ensure proper drainage and a smooth, even surface ahead of turf installation. The bottom area of the garden was fully cleared before installing a weed-proof membrane to prevent future growth. The lower surface was then finished with wood chippings, creating a tidy, low-maintenance area that still feels natural within the garden setting.
To complete the transformation, fresh turf was laid across the upper level, restoring a clean, usable lawn. New fencing was installed along the rear boundary to properly close off the lower section, giving the entire garden a defined, cohesive finish.
And at last, the finished result. A structured, low-maintenance outdoor space that feels open, practical, and ready to be enjoyed again.
